The Salvia Villa complex is situated in Skouloufia Village, 17 km from Rethymno City, the “capital” of Rethymno Prefecture, amidst some of the most popular and most important sights in Crete, including the mystical Cave of Melidoni, the legendary Arkadi Monastery, and Ancient Eleftherna.
Melidoni Cave is of great archaeological importance, as suggested by the rare findings recovered from it (they are exhibited in the Archeological Museum of Rethymno). Among the findings is a double copper axe dating back to the prehistoric period. During the Roman period, the Cave was used as a sanctuary of “Taleos Hermes”. It was actually a sacred site, as it was situated on the “crossroad” connecting three great ancient cities, Axos, Eleftherna and Grivilon.
Arkadi Monastery carries a history of sacrifice and bravery. In November 8th 1866, almost 1.500 warriors from all over Crete engaged in a bloody fight against 15.000 Turks. Unavoidably, the Greek defense broke and Cretans retreated to the gunpowder-keg. Then, Konstantinos Giampoudakis from Adele Village lit the gunpowder killing hundreds of Greeks and Turks. Arkadi was given the title of a European Freedom Monument by UNESCO.
Ancient Eleutherna, which thrived in Minoan times, is one the most ancient cities in Crete. It is located 30 km southeast of Rethymno City. Its location (i.e. the point where the road from the city of Knossos, the road from the ancient city of Kydonia and the road from Idi Mountain met) is probably the reason why it was so important. Still, this has not been confirmed.
The beach of Stavromenos, part of the 13 km beach front starting from Rethymno and ending in Scaleta, is kust 8 km away.
The broader area around Skouloufia features many smaller but perfectly preserved monuments worth visiting, such as the monument of Agios Ioannis (Saint John) with a sarcophagus dated back to 1531, the church of Virgin Mary and the church of Agia Paraskevi.
